SWIMMING IN THE SEA AND WATER ACTIVITIES
Torrevieja, about 50 km south of Alicante, is a popular resort on the Costa Blanca with several main sandy beaches. The town is known for its pink salt lagoons (Las Salinas) and pleasant microclimate, with sea temperatures of 25–27 °C in summer.
In the summer months (June–August) air temperatures often exceed 35 °C, making the area ideal for a summer holiday. Even in winter, when the sun is out, afternoon temperatures can reach 20 degrees, though nights are cooler.
Highlights and activities:
Pink Lake: A unique nature reserve with healing mud; the colour is most intense in August and September. The colouring is caused by the alga Dunaliella salina and bacteria. The lake lies within a natural park and offers healing mud and high salinity (350 g/l), similar to the Dead Sea. Swimming is prohibited for safety and ecological reasons. You’ll spot flamingos here. A pink train runs to the lakes from the town centre – a great trip for kids and adults.
Climate: Thanks to the salt lakes and higher iodine levels in the air, the area is considered one of the healthiest in Europe.
Activities: Water sports, diving and parasailing (flying on a parachute behind a motorboat) can be booked in the pedestrian zone near the Tourist Information Centre, specifically here: Real Club Náutico, www.rcnt.com
A boat trip to Tabarca Island (from the ports of Alicante and Santa Pola) is also lovely.
